Automatic Power Distribution Grid Fault Detection (Use Case #1)

Smart5Grid will demonstrate the capabilities of the developed NetApps for automatic selection of distribution network failures, based on the communication between the protection and fault detection devices on real power distribution infrastructures over the public 5G network of WI3. As soon as a failure is detected and isolated in milliseconds using the Smart5Grid communication platform between the peripheral nodes, the central system, and the communication among the IED, the rest of the network shall continue its normal function, whereas the goal of the demonstrated scenario will be the capability to minimize the SAIDI (System Average Interruption Duration Index) and CAIDI (Customer Average Interruption Duration Index) of the smart energy grid, which are very important indices for benchmarking by DSOs internationally.

Demonstration setup: The actual field pilot demonstration and performance evaluation of the Automatic Power Distribution Grid Fault Detection use case will be organized by installing the Remote Terminal Units in a Primary and Secondary Substations of the ENEL grid located in Olbia, Italy, for transmitting energy telemetry data to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of the operational centre.
